Awards_History

In 1940 the Academy began awarding citations and certificates to local scientists. The Board of Managers established awards for noteworthy accomplishments by scientists in the biological, physical, and engineering sciences, to be awarded during the Annual Meeting of the Academy. In subsequent years additional awards were added to recognize the achievements of science educators.

Among the recipients of awards by the Washington Academy of Sciences are Harry Diamond for Engineering in 1941, John Mather for Physical Sciences in 2006, and Vera Rubin for Distinguished Career in Science in 2012.

A few records, mostly in the 1980’s and 1990’s, are incomplete (shown in red in the table). If you can fill in any of the blanks, please contact us.

The first awards were presented in 1940 for work done in 1939 and earlier. In all cases, the year listed is that in which the award was given.
