The COVID-19 Crisis: A Perspective From India

Abstract

Each country is dealing with the pandemic differently. Dr. D. N. Reddy will provide an update from India, where the outbreak is particularly severe. He will cover 1) spread of COVID-19; 2) strategies taken to arrest the spread; 3) socio-economic conditions that are responsible for managing COVID-19; 4) how health care workers are coping with the stress; 5) current understanding of how the SARS-CoV2 attacks the human body; 6) current therapeutic strategies; 7) how specialists, such as gastroenterologists, are dealing with COVID-19; and 8) research directions in developing future therapeutics.

Dr. D. Nageshwar Reddy is an Indian gastroenterologist. He studied at the Kurnool Medical College. He is the Chairman of the biggest gastroenterology hospital in the world, the Asian Institute of Gastroenterology at Hyderabad. In 2002 he received the Padma Shri award, and in 2016 he received the Padma Bhushan award, the third-highest civilian award in the Republic of India, for “distinguished service of a high order”. An elected fellow of the National Academy of Medical Sciences, he was given the world’s highest gastroenterology award in Shanghai, China, at a function held in 2013.
